What is a Three Minute Thesis (3MT)?
The 3MT originated as a presentation competition. For us, it’s not a competition. We are adapting the concept to allow our students to hone research, communication and presentation skills.
STEP 1 – Selecting your topic
Nuclear medicine is the topic
STEP 2 – Research your topic and create your reference page
You must provide a minimum of 3 references from reputable sources. You must use at least 5 to get maximum points.
Reference articles written prior to 2018 will not be accepted. No more than 2 websites can be referenced.
If you’re not familiar with citing resources, the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) website has a tool to help you cite your source automatically in APA. Click HERE to go to the Purdue OWL.
The College Library has created a College Research Guide specifically for Radiologic Science. Go here and scroll down the list to Radiologic Sciences. This will take you to the page where you can access books, articles, and databases that will assist you in your search for references on your topic
Use these websites to find information Google Scholar reference guide
(MAKE SURE TO NOT USE REFERENCES THAT ARE BEFORE 2018)
STEP 3- Writing your 3MT script:
An integral part of the 3MT is your written script that will be used to narrate your PowerPoint slide. You will use this script to explain key concepts related to your topic. As you prepare your script, keep in mind that your audience is just like you, students that have little/no background in the radiologic sciences. As you read your script, it should sound like you’re having a conversation with a friend or fellow student or telling a story.
Begin with the end in mind: what key points do you want your audience to take away from your presentation. Don’t get carried away – three to four key points are plenty. Remember – you must keep this script to a three-minute time limit. Once you have decided on your key points, work backwards to provide supporting information for them. Be sure to include a summary at the end to restate your key points.
(Make sure to make the script around 3 minutes long when presenting it.)
STEP 4 – Creating your slide:
You are limited to a single slide to illustrate your topic! (POWERPOINT 365)
NO animations, video or movement of any kind is allowed on the slide.
The only text on the slide will be your topic title. The rest will be pictures/images related to your topic.
Pictures are used to illustrate your key points/concepts. DO NOT overdo it with the pictures. They should be organized on the page so that they are pleasing to the eye and do not distract from the information being presented.
