W1M_Discussion_1,2_HRM Competencies; Discussion 1, James: Based on my current work situation, and past work experiences, communication would be the competency I would consider to be my strongest. Every day, where I work now and have worked in the past, making time to speak to everyone was a must. Understanding other people and his or her background has always been fascinating to me. So why not use that in my favor. At my current place of employment, I am in charge of fourteen individuals who are in charge of the school yard. So being able to communicate with each of them on a daily basis is important for the safety of the kids while in class and on the schoolyard. For me it is easy to speak to everyone, but for everyone to speak to one another is a different story.
Which is why I would choose relationship management as the competency I would want to improve upon the most. Being able to communicate with people individually, and not being able to get them to communicate with each other is something I feel falls on my shoulders. I work at what is considered a high poverty school, so multiple fights happen every day. Which is why student safety is my number one priority. Wanting us to be a more cohesive team, things need to be done to improve on how I utilize relationship management at my school site.
We have tried holiday and Superbowl potlucks, but only a handful out of fourteen showed up. Also, a white elephant gift exchange during Christmas, but only a few wanted to participate in that too. The next step is to try team building workshops and activities on the days students go home early. Something where the food is supplied, and all they would have to do is show up willing to communicate. Discussion 2: Dennis, I am currently a member of a Private Equity responsible for Supply Chain Procurement Operations; however, I am also a retired Marine. After leaving the Marines I had to make a lot of changes to how I handle day to day operations and especially people. I believe my strongest competency is analytical aptitude. In order to give my stake holders the best information possible, I realize that I must always analyze not just my data, but others data as well. An example of this in a recent decision, is marketing offering a certain percentage off. After putting the data together, we were able to understand for certain product categories are return of investment would take approximately 18 months to recuperate.
My weakness is communication. I always would like to improve communication. This communication improvement is geared more towards laterally than up and down. I will admit, and mean for this to be in a funny way, but I know I can be petty to a certain degree. You also have to understand, Supply Chain is the escape goat for a lot of people. An example of this is during aftermaths of COVID. Everyone′s excuse of not having something was based on Supply Chain issues still.
I personally always strive to improve this. The biggest part is my personal ego. I take pride in my work, but sometimes have to realize other departments are not coming personally at my department.
