For this activity, you will analyze the ethical responsibilities of correctional officers who work in facilities where criminals are institutionalized. Also, you will examine and compare correctional leadership responsibilities (from Activity 5.2) to the duties of correctional officers who directly deal with the inmates on a daily basis. You will discuss how correctional officers ensure the health and safety of the inmates they supervise and how they can be involved in the rehabilitation processes by serving as mentors by offering advice and guidance. Finally, you will explore the importance of ethical decision making when officers deal with the use of force with criminals or perpetrators.
Activity Instructions
Identify a highly publicized case that involves the use of force and occurred within the last five years.
Provide a brief background of the case and the victim/suspects involved.
Discuss the legal implications and the outcome of the correctional officers involved.
Determine if another alternative method or legitimate justification could have mitigated the use of force.
Consider the following questions:
What are stigmas and/or stereotypes of officers and victims of use of force?
What is the public opinion on use of force standards among correctional officers throughout the country?
How has the use of force impacted legislative acts within the criminal justice system?
At the end of your submission, include a brief Design Statement explaining the process and tools you used to develop your work.
