This child(Moksh) is one of my afterschool students at the PEL Learning Center.

This child(Moksh) is one of my afterschool students at the PEL Learning Center. 90% of the students in the center are Chinese. Moksh is an Indian boy in 2nd Grade. We always celebrate Chinese festivals and eat Chinese food, but not a lot of Indian culture. I think it is a great opportunity to read this book to Moksh and let him know that he can share some Indian food and Indian culture in this community as well. I think it is crucial that everybody’s culture is getting valued.
After I read this book to him, I asked him a couple of questions.
ME: What do you think about this book? What do you think about having more books like yours in the classroom?
Moksh: I like this book because I have many connections. I like daal. It is what I would eat at home! I would feel happy if I could read and share a book about my culture.
Me: Maybe you can ask your friend to come over to your house to eat some Indian food someday
Moksh: I don’t know if they will like it tho, most of my friends they are Chinese.
Me: I like Indian food! I love eating Chicken Masala and Indian naan! Have you ever eaten dumplings?
Moksh: I love dumplings; I had dumplings the other day!
Me: Maybe your friends will like Indian food just like you like dumplings, right?
Moksh: Yes, maybe I will ask my parents to cook some food for my friend!
