The idea of this dissertation is to explore how the female beauty standards have changed in the 21st century, investigating the role that hip-hop/rap culture might have had a stake in it. We know that the ideal physical standards for women were skinny, toned models just like theVictoria’s secret angels for example. But nowadays, the ‘hourglass’ figure is gaining much more admiration – example: big boobs, big butt, small waist. and the number of surgical procedures done are exponentialy increasing. The idea is to study, how and where these numbers are increasing and possibly draw a connection to the ‘recent’ rise of popularity of the hip-hop culture. Also, analyse discourse of male rappers and how they promote this type of bodies,and also the female rappers and how they claim their sexuality by owning their bodies, which are typically curvy. This is the time where we see white women all over the world resemble african women physically due to procedures – appropriation? Since Hip-Hop started in the Bronx by african-american people, hip-hop’s roots are deeply connected to this type of female physionomy. Despite the discourse in rap being often objectifying of women, women still want to look like this standard of beauty more and more. Please analyse music videos and lyrics to come up with relevant evidence of how women are portrayed.
