The Background

The book of Psalms is a collection of sacred songs, hymns, poem

The Background

The book of Psalms is a collection of sacred songs, hymns, poems, and prayers from the different periods in the history of Israel, and it belongs to the third section of the Hebrew canon: the Writings (Heb. kethubhim); the early Church Fathers labeled this section as hagiographa, or “sacred writings.” It served as the hymnbook of ancient Israel, and many Christians today consider it to be the heart of the Hebrew Bible. In general, the various psalms are mainly the words of people addressed to God. The Law and the Prophets, in contrast, are primarily the words of God addressed to people. In the book of Psalms, the heart turns inward, and the words come straight from the secret depths of the spirit. There are more complaint psalms than any other category. Forty percent of the psalms are classified as “laments.”
