In your essay, clearly delineate a paragraph for each shot, and label them accordingly (shot one, shot two, and so forth). For each shot, also specify how long the shot lasts.
Step Four: Describe what happens in each shot as well as each shot’s formal elements (e.g., camera angles, camera movements, and lighting). Be sure to be detailed and thorough. And describe the events and elements in chronological order. Here, be sure to use specific film studies terminology from our course.
Be sure you describe the following: shot number (how many shots are in the sequence), cuts (type and number in the sequence), shot duration, depth of focus (is the background in focus?), music, lighting, types of shots (e.g., long shot or close-up), camera angles, and what happens on screen.
Step Five: After you have thoroughly and accurately enumerated all the clip’s major formal elements and all the events in the clip, write an analysis of at least 500 words in which you discuss how the clip’s formal elements augment the clip’s effect. In other words, think about why the filmmakers decided to film the clip the way they did. What did those filmmaking techniques allow them to do that other techniques would not?
For this step, observe the following sub-steps: 1) articulate a clear, defensible thesis as your first sentence of the analysis. The thesis should be succinct and arguable; it should make your position and argument clear from the very beginning. 2) Use specific and clear evidence (including film studies terminology from our class) from the clip to support your thesis.
Your entire essay must be at least 700 words long. Be sure to include your word count at the end of the essay.
