To ensure quality and rigor in quantitative studies, the researcher must ensure that data is trustworthy by assessing the data for reliability and validity. Reliability focuses on the consistency and repeatability of test results. Validity in research ascertains that the test measures what it states it will measure (Boswell & Cannon, 2023).  Trustworthiness of research needs to be established for nurses to make informed decisions about implementing evidence-based practice. Decisions made with data lacking reliability and validity have the potential to be flawed and may lead to unintended consequences.
In quantitative studies there are internal and external threats to validity. According to Tappen (2023) “Internal validity is concerned with minimizing the effects of extraneous or confounding factors that may interfere with interpretation of the results of the experiment” (p. 71). Minimizing threats to internal validity is achieved by utilizing a good research design, controlling bias, and using measurement or observation to rule out threats. To support internal validity, the researchers can use statistical analysis to quantify the probability of errors (Houser, 2023).
Threats to external validity refer to the generalizability of the study results to diverse populations, places, and situations (Tappen, 2023). Threats to external ability may include selection effects which can be mitigated by selecting subjects who represent the population. Another threat to external validity is time effects. This occurs when outdated evidence is applied in current times. Another time effect is concerned with the time it takes for a treatment or intervention to take effect (Houser, 2023). These threats to external validity can be overcome by using current evidence and by having a good research design which accounts for time in measuring for desired effects.  
The best available research maximizes internal and external validity. Researchers are tasked with trying to find ways to control internal and external validity. This needs to be done without compromising the other one (Houser, 2023). This is the challenge nurse researchers must overcome to produce evidence which improves nursing practice.

In quantitative research, “validity is determined by the meaningful and appropriate interpretation of the data obtained from the measuring instrument as a result of the analyses” (Sürücü & Maşlakçı, 2020). Selection bias, measurement inaccuracy, unpredictable variables, and researcher bias are among the factors that might compromise the validity of quantitative studies. These elements have the potential to affect the results’ reliability and accuracy, compromising the study’s validity. It is imperative that we address these risks in order to guarantee the reliability of the research findings.
According to various strategies can be used by researchers to lessen risks to the validity of quantitative research. Measurement error is decreased by thoroughly validating measurement tools, and selection bias is minimized through randomized controlled trials. Clear documentation of procedures and outcomes allows analysis and duplication. Researchers can improve the validity and reliability of their study findings by putting these strategies into practice.
