Planning/Prewriting – Thesis Statement & Outline.
Use freewriting or brainstorming (although this planning/prewriting step is not graded, it is highly recommended to help you generate ideas for the essay. You will not submit this part with the outline.)
Determine your topic (“the place”).
Choose a place that you know about from previous exposure.  You can choose a place you have previously visited or somewhere you have dreamed about visiting. Perhaps you studied it in school, watched a documentary, or even read an article about it. You must know enough about this place since this is not a research-based assignment!
Determine why you want to visit this place.
If you love to cook, you may want to visit Paris to taste French cuisine. If you love to ski, you may want to go skiing in the Swiss Alps. If you love history, you may want to tour ancient ruins in Rome. If Native American culture interests you, then you may want to visit Santa Fe, New Mexico.
Compose a thesis statement.
Indicate the place you want to visit and the dominant reasons why you want to go there.
Create an outline for the essay.
Please see the outline example below. You can also download this template: Essay Part 1 Thesis and Outline TemplateDownload Essay Part 1 Thesis and Outline Template
