In “Thinking About Strategy,” Meyer and Staggenborg (2007) identify several critical aspects of decision making in social movements: “the demands or claims made by collective actors; the arenas or venues of collective action; and the tactics or forms of collective action.” They suggest that these strategic aspects are linked together by a focus on a particular target of collective action.
First, define and explain each of these strategic aspects. Consider: what are the range of options for each? What factors do activists/social movements consider and how do they make their choices? (Approximately 1 paragraph each)
Then, pick an issue you want to advocate for. Describe and explain the issue. (Approximately 1 paragraph)
Next, create a strategy to advocate for that issue (you are essentially proposing a new campaign, organization, protest, etc.). Include a discussion of demands/claims, arenas/venues, tactics/forms, and target. Justify each of your choices: explain why this is the best strategy to meet your goal. (Approximately 1 paragraph each)
In conclusion, reflect on the efficacy of your strategy. Do you think it’s a good strategy? Do you think it will work? (Approximately 1 paragraph)
