The study of literature is often organized based on significant literary periods and movements. A period is a historical era, such as “The Colonial Era of 1607-1765” whereas a movement is an artistic/cultural response to an historical era. For example, transcendentalism is a movement associated with the Romantic period.
These periods and movements are typically defined based on historical timelines and common trends and features of significant works of literature produced during a particular time period. A basic understanding of these periods and movements is useful for any student of English. This assignment requires you to identify and describe significant literary periods and movements.
For each period/movement listed below, write a paragraph of 75-125 words that accomplishes the following: 1) Identifies the years during which the period/movement occurred; 2) Describes the key historical and literary features of the movement; 3) Identifies at least two major works (novels, poems, plays, etc.) associated with the movement. Also, identify the author for each work.
Write in third person and double-space the entire document. Include either an MLA heading or APA title page. Include page numbers.
Format the entries based on the example below. List the name of the period/movement in bold, 12-point font above each paragraph. List the periods/movements in chronological order.
