In 1,000-1,250 words, explain from your point of view how a selected image (photograph, painting, work of propaganda, etc.) creates effect/affect for a specific type of viewer.
Questions to consider:
Analytic Questions
How does the image make a specific type of viewer see, feel, and think?
Does the image present an explicit or implicit argument?
What is the lasting impression of the image?
How do techniques work together with details to generate a response in the short and/or long term?
For example, how does a black-and-white image of an empty decrepit classroom with purposefully blurred edges create a different effect or make an argument in a different manner than a color image of a decrepit classroom filled with children?
Relevance Questions
What is important to consider about the image? Is the depth/breadth/duration/intensity/severity of influence, indirect impact, symbolic importance, and/or scale important to consider?
How and/or why is the relevant aspect important? Most often, to build an argument about relevance, two different types of relevance are connected.
For example, it is important to consider the depth of emotional impact of an image in 2018 because the emotional weight determines the duration of time the public focuses on the issue before the conversation shifts to another topic.
Treat the image like a machine that performs a function. Do not focus on the artist′s intent. Instead, focus on explaining the experience of viewing. What do you notice, focus upon, feel, and think? What do you remember first, second about the image? When you think of the image, do you remember a detail, a feeling, or an idea? What sticks with the viewer? What is the lasting impression?
Provide an overall desсrіption of the image in the introduction and then describe specific parts of the image in the body section.
Incorporate borrowed material from two sources, possibly in your discussion of biographical and/or historical context.
Three sources total should be utilized, including the image.
Include in-text citation where appropriate and a Works Cited page formatted according to MLA guidelines.
