Syllabus instructions: 
“For your paper, you will read an article and write a paper describing the article and how
it relates to the material we cover in the course. You should explain how it casts doubt
on, amplifies, explains, or contradicts things that others have said—in lecture, in the text,
or in one of the readings covered in recitation.
The paper should be about 5 pages long and have the following general structure:
• Brief introduction of the topic. (1 or 2 paragraphs)
• Motivation behind the new experiment in the paper. Describe what question the
experiment is trying to answer. Often this will take the form of testing a particular
hypothesis or hypotheses. (1 page)
• Presentation of the paper’s main results and conclusions. (1 page)
• Discussion of how these results relate to what was said about the topic in class or
in the text. Are they just what you expected given what you learned in class? Do
they disagree? Or do they just amplify and elaborate what you already knew? (1.5
pages)
• Your critique of the paper and/or suggestions for future research. (1 page)
The lengths are suggested, you do not need to adhere to them exactly. Also, although
need to describe the main points of the experiment and its results, you do not have
room to mention every detail. You need to decide which points are critical for the reader
to understand your paper. For different articles, different things may be the most
important.
The paper will be graded on how well you understand the article, the quality of the
explanations, and the clarity of the writing. Note that you must write your paper on one
of the articles listed that will be provided during the course of the semester. The articles
will be posted on Classes. The due date is will be announced later in the semester.
Finally, plagiarism of any source, including the target article or textbook, will not be
tolerated. Papers with plagiarism will be given a failing grade and referred to the dean
for disciplinary action. The rules of proper citation of others’ work will be discussed in
recitations; you are responsible for knowing them.”
