ENG 120/020 Argument Framework
Narrow the focus of your arguable topic.
Using your focused research question and consider what type of argument you will create. Will it be causal argument, definition argument, evaluative argument, informative argument or persuasive argument?
What is your position, claim, or proposition that is debatable and has opposing viewpoints?
What are your reasons why you believe the way that you do?
Why is your claim reasonable? Please note; your claim is your thesis statement.
How will you defend your position and how will you counter the argument against it?
Structure your argument accordingly:
Your introduction will include your statement of the case (provides rationale or need for the argument) and your proposition (asserts a position or claim that will be supported, demonstrated, or proved in the course of the paper), which familiarizes audience with subject, provides background or context, conveys credibility, and establishes tone.
(3) Body Paragraphs that state your main points in your argument.
Opposing Argument/Concession or compromise
Conclusion
Development of the argument offers convincing, credible evidence in support of the proposition.
Strategies for Arguing Effectively:
Know your audience and purpose
Establish an appropriate tone
Anticipate the arguments of the opposition by questioning the validity of data or evidence, questioning authority or challenge the logic of the opposition.
Make concessions
Use methods of development/rhetorical modes with clear intention
Follow a logical line of reasoning
Use appeals effectively
Use analogy and other rhetorical devices
Assess the evidence
Avoid common rhetorical fallacies
Look for flaws in your own and others’ reasoning process
Maintaining Consistency

Transitions are bridges between what has been read and what is about to be read. Transitions help readers move from sentence to sentence; they also alert readers to more global connections of ideas-those between paragraphs or even larger blocks of text.
With sentence-level transitions, certain words and phrases signal connections between (or within) sentences. Make sure tone is appropriate and precise. Some common transitions are: To show addition, to give examples, to compare, to contrast, to summarize or conclude, to show time, to show place or direction and to indicate logical relationship.
Paragraph-level transitions link the first sentence of a new paragraph with the first sentence of the previous paragraph. These topic sentences signal global connections. Look for opportunities to allude to the subject of a previous paragraph (as summed up in its topic sentence) in the topic sentence of the next one.
Example:
Consider aseptic packaging, the synthetic packagingfor the “juice boxes” so many children bring to school with their lunch. Finish your paragraph…………………
(Next paragraph)
What is true for juice boxes is also true for other forms of synthetic packaging. Finish your paragraph……………..
In long essays, you will need to alert readers to connections between blocks of text that are more than one paragraph long. You can do this by inserting transitional or short paragraphs at key points in the essay.
