For this assignment, each student will choose a scene from a play that they find especially interesting or important and then develop a staging for the scene that will be the basis for their paper.
Each paper will consist of four parts:
Part I: Identify the scene and explain why you find it significant. Is it a crucial turning point in the plot? Does it develop character(s)? Does it open or conclude the play? What does this scene need to do in order to be successful?
Part II: Explain your idea for the staging. Your discussion should cover issues such as setting, costume, casting, blocking (movement of the actors), sound effects (if any). What kind of a stage would you choose?
Part III: Explain what you are trying to accomplish through this staging. Would it emphasis the characterization or plot point you identified as important in Part I? Would it create a certain affect you find important? In other words, explain what you chose to stage the scene is this way.
You can write this essay based on the play “A Streetcar Named Desire” OR “Death of a Salesman.” Find an important scene from either play and write a 5 page essay explaining how you would set up the scene, as well as answering all the parts listed above. Be descriptive and use specific quotes from the play to back your ideas. The “source required” is the play you decide on.
