Discussion #4 Responses to the AMA-Selection of letter and points due by 4/15, videos posted by 4/17, responses due by 4/21 – team 2
This discussion board will be slightly different than the previous three. There will be no leader for this discussion, but you still will work with your team to create counterarguments to the AMA regarding full practice authority for NPs.
Simply put, health policy briefs are a scholarly way to argue for the best options and advocate for change in healthcare delivery. This last discussion board assignment gives you the opportunity to deliver a scholarly, clear, and succinct counterargument to the American Medical Association’s (AMA) efforts to suppress full practice authority for advanced practice nurses. We absolutely have the knowledge and experience to advocate for patients and our profession. It is your responsibility as an advanced practice nurse to respond to the detractors and naysayers who benefit financially from limiting our ability to provide excellent care to our communities.
You have read about regulations, accreditation, and certification and discussed the benefits and challenges of how they promote patient safety. In your counterarguments make sure to include evidence of the systems in place that provide checks and balances and push APRNs to provide evidence-informed and competent care.
The AMA is one of the largest and most funded organizations that oppose full practice authority for NPs. The AMA is the greatest barrier to expanding care by nurse practitioners across the US. The video and letters in the linked website below are likely to stir up feelings of anger and maybe even hopelessness. Honor those feelings and channel them into a strong and professional counterargument.
1. After watching this video from the AMA website:
AMA fights scope of practice. Links to an external site.
AND reading the I CAN Act AMA response letterDownload I CAN Act AMA response letter
2. Work with your team to identify 3 points that the AMA targets opposing full practice authority for NPs. One team member will list the letter your team has chosen and the 3 points identified in the discussion board.
3. Each teammate will select one of the three points and create a concise counterargument with AT LEAST 2 references. Create a video recording of yourself stating your counterargument, and upload your recording to the discussion board. Your recording must be NO LONGER than 60 seconds. In the discussion window please include your 2 references in APA format, and a short personal reflection on what you felt and experienced in creating your counterargument.
4. All teammates need to respond to each other’s counterargument videos. Be bold here and offer critique on the counterarguments that will ultimately strengthen them.
5. No summary is needed. The rubric is slightly modified from the earlier discussion boards. Please review it before recording your counterargument.
