Compare and contrast the themes of social class and gender roles in ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Jane Eyre.’ How do the protagonists, Elizabeth Bennet and Jane Eyre, navigate the societal expectations of their time regarding marriage, independence, and status? Analyze how these themes contribute to the development of the characters and the overall message of each novel.
For the final research project you can have both analytical and creative components for your project. Your self-designed project in consultation with me should incorporate analysis of literary works, literary criticism, and film adaptations of novels. Please send me an email with a paragraph explaining your focus for this research project. Your project will include a combination of primary and secondary sources. You may also include a creative component, but it isn’t required. You could, for example, write a spin-off of a literary work we’ve read this semester or a creative work that was inspired by one of the readings. This creative component would count toward the 3000-word requirement. The works cited page, however, does not count toward the word requirement.
