Comp/Lit Essay 3 (Mulry)
Answer one question only.
Make your responses text based (your primary evidence is likely
to come from close textual analysis and criticism drawn from the CCGA
databases).
There is a required research element in your response with a minimum of
four scholarly sources from Ebscohost (Academic Search Elite), Proquest,
or Project Muse (CCGA databases). Use one appropriate scholarly web-source
(do not use Wikis or study sites like Gradesaver, Enotes, Bookrags, Schmoop,
etc.). I expect you to explore and demonstrate some knowledge of prevailing
criticism, but the essay should also be individual and personal in approach,
offering your perspective of the text, and demonstrating your understanding and
appreciation.
To achieve a passing grade, your essay must show proficiency with
using secondary sources, via paraphrase and direct quotation, and you
must punctuate (using quotation marks) and accurately cite the source
using MLA format. Be sure to quote sparingly but appropriately from the original
story text (primary source), and the critical articles (secondary sources). Cite the
Glaspell using a number page source (I’ve included one as a pdf in the drama
folder in Content (Glaspell 981). Cite the Shakespeare identifying act scene and
line (Shakespeare 2.1.34-36).
Aim for a 1200 (minimum) word paper, double-spaced, single sided
(show the word count on the essay below the final paragraph of regular essay
text). Use Times New Roman 12 as your font of choice, and MLA style
documentation
I am expecting a strong thesis claim in your first paragraph, with a
defined argument and anticipated evidence (your claim needs to be in place at
the beginning of the essay). This is your opportunity to show me that you have
learned the necessary skills to pass the writing class with a developed essay,
accurate citation and documentation. See syllabus for due date.
1. How does either “Trifles,” or “Othello” explore gender issues?
2. What does Glaspell have to say about justice in ″Trifles″ and do
you agree with her?
3. The title ″Trifles″ alerts the reader to the importance of small, and
apparently insignificant details throughout the play. Discuss the role of
trifles in Glaspell′s drama.
4. How far is Shakespeare’s play a commentary on race, or is it really
addressing a completely different matter?
5. What does Shakespeare’s Tragedy tell us about love and jealousy?
6. Iago is Shakespeare’s great villain. What is his role and function in
Shakespeare’s Othello?
