What does it mean to be “healthy?”
In the realm of nutrition, fitness, and wellness, we find myriad perspectives on what it means to be “healthy.” In this discussion, you’ll think about one of the following questions, find evidence to support your answer, and share your thoughts with your classmates. Please be sure to read the requirements below the prompts.
Choose one of the following prompts to answer. I’ve linked some potentially relevant articles to help you get started, but you could also find your own (and don’t necessarily need to use the ones I’ve linked).
Body Mass Index (BMI)
does not distinguish between fat tissue and lean tissue in its calculations. Is there value to using BMI as a proxy for physical health? Explain why or why not, and make sure to include evidence to support your position.
How does social mediaLinks to an external site. affect public understanding of evidence-based findings on diet and nutrition, and do the major “trendy” diets align with evidence-based recommendations? Compare and contrast the evidence-based data with the advice being given on social media sites and in main-stream fads, and whether you think the average consumer is helped or hindered by social media nutrition and “healty eating” sites.
What role does socioeconomic statusLinks to an external site. play in determining a person’s overall wellness? Explain what measures of wellness are affected or not, and make sure to include evidence to support your position.
Can a person be “overweight” and healthy?
Similarly, can a person be “underweight” and healthy? Who decides what is “normal” and what is “healthy?” Explain your position, and provide evidence to support it.
How (and does?) the practice of “mindfulness” promote wellness? 
Explain what measures of wellness are affected or not, and explain your position using evidence.
Requirements
Answer one of the prompts with a discussion post of at least 250 words. 
Provide at least 1 citation in any format (MLA, APA, CSE, etc) to support your position. 
Posts should be entirely in your own words – no direct quotations or block quotes. 
Reply to at least one classmate (preferably someone who did a different prompt than you, but that’s not mandatory) with a substantive response meant to further the discussion. Examples might include:
Questioning something they wrote
Pointing out a contradiction or issue with their position
Provide thoughts on how you might approach the question differently
Providing additional evidence to support their position in another way
Informing them of something additional they could consider in their response
Be respectful in all replies- embrace the discomfort of disagreement, and try to understand the other person’s perspective.
