Assignment Three — Annotated Bibliography (250 pts)
One of the most difficult tasks that students face in writing a research paper is collecting and organizing information from their sources. After searching through multiple databases, readings dozens of articles, and consulting reference book after reference book, it is all too easy to become confused about where specific information or ideas are located.  An annotated bibliography is a tool that can help students to solve these problems by giving them a specific structure to follow when taking notes about their sources.
To help you keep track of your research for our final paper, this assignment will ask you to write an annotated bibliography of all the sources you plan to use.  For each source you will need to provide a full bibliographical citation, a brief summary of the work as a whole, and an explanation of how the source will be used in your final paper. All of the material you need to complete this assignment is posted on Eagle under the Paper Three Assignment Group; the material is organized by date and each piece should be completed in order.  The directions below will give you a general explanation of the process we will follow.
Pre-writing — Choosing a Topic and Finding Sources
Because this assignment is linked to our final writing assignment, you will need to begin by choosing a topic for your research paper. Follow the directions in Lecture 3.1 for selecting a topic and completing the Topic Selection Worksheet to get started on this part of the project. You’ll need to post your completed worksheet on Eagle and get your topic approved before you move onto the next step.
You’ll need to use the library catalog and library databases (discussed in Lecture 3.1) as your primary resources for finding academic sources. You will need to select no less than 10 and no more than 12 sources for your annotated bib. Follow the guidelines discussed in the lecture notes for selecting and evaluating sources and be prepared to defend your choices.
For each of the sources you find, you’ll need to provide a complete works cited entry, a brief summary, an explanation of the material/information you plan to borrow, and an evaluation of the source.  Samples of completed worksheets and directions for what you’ll need to submit are posted on Eagle in the Paper Three Assignment Group.
Your finished rough draft should be in Ariel 12-point font, with a separate title page on which you list your name, the title of your bibliography, the date, and your course and section number.
