Application Log Assignment Instructions
Background:
Theories are more than intellectual exercises.  One measure of their value is their ability to help make sense of everyday life (i.e., Practical Utility).  The Application Log Assignment is intended to help you link the theories you study in this class, to the world beyond this class.  Overall, think of each Log as a short essay that must:
Fully answer the prompt to demonstrate your understanding.
Explain vocabulary terms from the Chapter/Theory to demonstrate your comprehension.
Apply the terms to your examples in order to demonstrate your application.
Due Dates:
One Log opportunity will be given per week, most weeks of the semester, due on Sundays by 11:59 PM PST.  On Canvas there are 10 opportunities (10 separate due dates) for you to submit 3 separate Logs for credit.  See Canvas for due dates.  Logs can be accepted for late credit but there are no extensions. See the Late Policy on the Syllabus.
Tutoring:
See our Communication Tutors for help with your Logs: Communication Lab and Tutoring
Example Log:
See an example Log here: Application Logs Example
Detailed Instructions:
During the entire semester, you are required to submit a minimum of 3 Application Logs.  You will have the opportunity to submit 10 Application Logs, and only your best 3 Logs will count in the Gradebook.  This means that you can submit all 10 Logs, or only the minimum 3 Logs, or any number in between 3 and 10.  Again, only 3 Logs will count toward  your semester grade.  Ask me if this is not clear!
For each Log, you will be presented with one or two prompts to respond.  If there are two prompts – two choices – for a Log, you are to pick and answer only one prompt.
Your Log must be 600-1200 words (2-4 pages), double-spaced, 1-1.5 inch margins.  There’s really no maximum word count, but please try to keep your Logs under 1500 words (5 pages).
Your Log must use at least five vocabulary terms from the Chapter/Theory you are writing about.  Each time you use a vocabulary term, type that term in italics font.
Your Log must be essay-style (full sentences, paragraphs, etc.) created with word processor software (Microsoft Word or Google Docs).  You will submit each Log directly on Canvas by uploading your file.  DO NOT SUBMIT AS COPY/PASTE.
Grading:
Each Log will be graded on how accurately you follow the Instructions.
Each Log will be graded on how accurately you apply the vocabulary terms to the prompt.
Each Log will be graded on how insightful and detailed is your answer. This is the most important part.  DO NOT SIMPLY SUMMARIZE THE THEORY.  Your goal is to answer the prompt and apply the theory with an example.
Each Log will be graded on how free your Log is from grammar/spelling errors.
Each Log is worth up to 50 points.
A score of 50-44 is excellent. Your Log had a highly relevant example, used more than five vocabulary terms, and was written very well.
A score of 43-40 is above average.  Your Log had a mostly relevant example, used more than five vocabulary terms, and could use some editing of your writing.
A score of 39-35 is average work.  Your Log had a somewhat relevant example, used the minimum five vocabulary terms or less, and needed more editing of your writing.
Any score less than 35 is below average work. Your Log did not meet the expectations.
See files for an example of an Excellent log.
Observations About This Example (Things You Should Do Too):
The first paragraph states the theory’s title and lead author(s).
The last sentence in the first paragraph is the Log’s thesis statement. This is the main goal your Log will accomplish.
The second paragraph is a short description of the example being analyzed. It’s a good idea to provide context first.
The next body paragraphs explain and define each vocabulary term, then show the connection between those terms and the example.  You are encouraged to cite/quote/reference the textbook, and be sure to use correct APA format.  You must always and fully answer the prompt.
The last paragraph summarizes the Log and discusses the Critique of the theory. It’s a good idea to explore the weaknesses of each theory, to demonstrate your comprehension and to prepare for the Theory Analysis Paper. See the “Critique” section of the chapter in the textbook for help.
