4.Follow the instructions, no shortcuts. Shortcuts lead to a lot of erasing and frustration.
5.After you have laid out the construction of your drawing, upload an image to works in progress
6. Once approved you will now start to lay in your values.
7. Start by comparing the values of the image with your value scale.
8. What and where is your lightest and darkest values?
9. You should notice that most of the values will fall in the mid-range with light and dark accents.
10. Notice how the shadows reinforce the shapes of the forms.
11. Lay in values lightly and slowly build the darks.
12. Work towards eliminating all construction lines so that your value shifts are creating your 3D forms.
Supplies:
Full sheet of mixed media paper, 18” x 24”
Range of graphite pencils (at least 2B, 3B, 4B, 6B)
Pencil sharpener
Kneaded eraser
White rubber eraser
Sheet of newsprint, (use to cover your drawing while you are working on it so you do rub your bare arm or hand over your drawing while working on it.)
As you scroll through the student samples, be aware of composition, placement on the page, and value range and no trace of construction lines.

Start with an Envelope type shape around all of the
objects to place the overall shape on your paper. “SKETCH LIGHTLY”
Be aware of your edges and negative space and make sure you are filling the space
Estimate placement of objects using ellipses and circles. Be mindful of overlapping shapes and page placement on picture plane.
Site size a main object.
Lay this object in correctly and proportionately. (center and minor axis)
Now, site size and lay in other objects using the same proportional measurement.
Come back in and correct shapes and add linear detail.
