This assignment will help prepare you to write Essay 2 (Literature Review).
Writing an annotated bibliography is a common academic exercise to complete before writing a longer essay. It prompts you to consider what sources you will use in your essay and how you will use them to develop your argument. For this reason, you should have a plan for how you are going to organize your literature review (how you will group the various sources to explain the existing academic conversation) prior to completing this assignment.
At the top of the page, state the topic your literature review addresses and the main issue or problem at stake.
Present, in alphabetical order, the full citation for each source you plan to discuss in your literature review. (Please consult The Little Seagull Handbook if you need guidance on how to cite a particular kind of source, or use Zotero to create your citations.)
Then, after each citation:Summarize the source in 3-4 sentences.
Assess the source, explaining why it is an authoritative source or, if not authoritative, why it is relevant to discuss in your literature review.
Explain how it will function in your argument. You should reflect on how you will discuss the source in terms of its relationship to the other sources examined in the literature review and your plans for organizing your analysis.

Sample Entry for an Annotated Bibliography:
Assignment 2: Annotated Bibliography: Due after Spring Break, March 10
Basically, an annotated bibliography is a list of five sources you might use for Essay 3. Each of the five entries should look something like this:
“Title of Article or TED Talk.” Author or Presenter. Date published or recorded.
3-5 sentences summarizing the source. 2-3 sentences stating why the source is valid and useful. 1-2 sentences explaining how you might use the source in Essay 3.
Example
“How to Find Your Voice for Climate Action,” a TED Talk by Fehinti Balogun. November 2022.
In this TED Talk, British actor Fehinti Balogun talks about his experience with climate change anxiety. He relates his passion for activism, but describes several cultural obstacles for him and other people of color. First, he says there’s great pressure for him to succeed as either “a doctor, a lawyer, or a businessman.” That kind of success requires that he “stay out of trouble,” meaning no involvement with the police, which activism can lead to. He also reminds us—and his mostly White TED Talk audience—that a Black man is many times more likely to be arrested and met with force when demonstrating or protesting. Balogun’s TED Talk is important because, as he himself points out, in Western cultures, climate activism is largely seen as a movement for middleclass White people. We need to know that in other parts of the world, people of color are doing far more than we know to protect biodiversity and prevent climate change. I might use this TED Talk to supplement how Naomi Klein and other White, Western advocates frame the discussion of climate change.
